Is there a subscription?

No. Hail is prepaid. You add credit and spend it on calls, texts, and email. The one monthly cost is a dedicated number, if you buy one.

What does the $0.10 per minute include?

The rate includes the phone connection, the voice, transcription, and the language model. You get no separate bill for any of these.

Does one balance cover calls, texts, and email?

Yes. One prepaid balance pays for calls, texts, and email. On the managed service, you do not need separate Twilio, SendGrid, or carrier accounts.

What counts as one text?

A text of up to 160 characters is billed once. Carriers split a longer text into 160-character parts, and each part is billed once. Every SMS provider bills this way. Hail sends and receives text only. MMS and picture messages are not available. The rate above is for US numbers. Hail sends texts to every country at three prices. A text costs $0.018 to the US, $0.035 to Canada, and $0.20 to every other destination. Carrier costs differ by destination.

What happens when my credit runs out?

Usage stops until you add credit. Nothing is billed, and your balance does not go below zero.

What about the number and email domain?

Outbound calls and texts use a shared Hail number with no rental fee. Every workspace gets an email address on mail.hail.so, or you can use your own domain. You can also buy a local, national, or toll-free number for calls, SMS, or both. Hail compares several carriers and buys the number at the lowest price. You pay what the carrier charges, from $1.00/mo. Hail adds no markup.

Do I need a Twilio account?

Not on the managed service. Hail provisions numbers through its own carrier accounts with one API call. If you self-host, you use your own carrier keys and pay the carrier directly. Self-hosted Hail is free.
