How long does 10DLC registration take? The honest timeline.
Before a US application sends its first text on a local number, it passes A2P 10DLC: brand registration, campaign vetting, and carrier review. Here is what each step actually takes, and what restarts the clock.
The timeline, step by step
Brand registration. Your legal entity, EIN, and website go to the registry. Mismatched details fail silently and cost a resubmission.
Campaign vetting. You describe the use case, submit sample messages, and document the opt-in flow. External vetting partners review it; each round takes days.
End to end. AWS documents up to 4 weeks for the full 10DLC process. A rejection at any step restarts the queue, and carriers filter unregistered traffic while you wait.
Toll-free is not a shortcut. Toll-free numbers carry their own verification, and messaging is blocked while it is pending.
What speeds it up
- Make the brand record match your website and EIN exactly, before submitting.
- Publish the opt-in flow on a public page and link it in the campaign.
- Write sample messages that match the declared use case word for word.
- Answer STOP/HELP in your samples; vetting looks for both.
- Submit once, correctly. Every rejection rejoins the queue from the back.
Where Hail fits
Hail runs SMS for AI agents and backends on registered, compliant numbers, and enforces opt-outs at the API level: a STOP is honored before your code sees the send. Rates are pay-per-use and public on the pricing page. If you are mid-build, the SMS length calculator is free.
Questions
How long does 10DLC registration take in total?
Plan for up to 4 weeks end to end: brand registration is usually fast, campaign vetting takes days to weeks, and a rejection restarts the queue. AWS documents up to 4 weeks for the full process.
Why is my 10DLC campaign stuck in review?
Common causes: the sample messages do not match the declared use case, the opt-in flow is not documented on a public page, the brand and website details disagree, or the vetting partner has a backlog. You rarely get told which one.
Can I send SMS while 10DLC is pending?
On US 10DLC numbers, effectively no: carriers filter or block unregistered A2P traffic, and toll-free numbers are blocked while their own verification is pending.
What restarts the 10DLC clock?
A campaign rejection. You fix the finding, resubmit, and rejoin the review queue. Each round of external vetting takes days, and several rounds are common.
How does opt-out handling work?
Carriers require STOP handling on A2P traffic. On Hail, opt-outs are enforced at the API level: a recipient who texted STOP cannot be messaged again until they opt back in.
