Compare / Hail vs Retell

Hail vs Retell.

Both platforms run the voice conversation for you. Retell packages it for call operations; on Hail a call is one tool a broader agent delegates, next to SMS and email. Here's the honest trade-off.

★ TL;DR

Choose Retell if you are standing up an AI phone operation and want the workflows, transfers, and analytics packaged. Choose Hail if a broader agent orchestrates the work and calls are one of its tools, next to texting and email, behind one MCP endpoint. Open source, pay-as-you-go.

What Retell gets right

Retell is polished for phone operations: managed voice agents, realtime orchestration, phone numbers, transfers, and the analytics a call operation wants. Teams replacing or augmenting a call center get a lot out of the box.

If the goal is an AI call operation rather than a product you code, that packaging is the point.

Where it slows an agent down

The scope is the phone operation. Conversation design and workflows are configured in Retell's platform, priced per conversation minute on top of the underlying model and telephony costs. It is voice-centric: the confirmation text and the follow-up email mean adding other vendors, accounts, and bills. Closed source, hosted only.

If a broader agent is orchestrating the work, Retell covers one channel of it, with its own platform config to maintain.

Retell packages an AI call operation. On Hail, the call is one tool your agent already has.

How Hail does it

On Hail your agent delegates the call: it passes a system prompt over MCP or REST, and Hail's hosted voice pipeline runs the conversation, turn detection and transcript included. The transcript lands in the same event ledger as the SMS and email the agent sends on the same key and balance.

Rates are published pay-per-use, no seats, no platform subscription, and the whole thing is open source (AGPL) if you would rather self-host.
